It’s the NFL playoffs’ penultimate weekend – aka The Patriots Playground, and we don’t say that with any hint of love or veneration. More importantly, it’s another industry night as the Screen Actors Guild hands out its awards, as it has annually for as many years as there are hours for Jack Bauer to save America (and Screen Scholars has its nomination for if ever Bulwer-Lytton adds a non-fiction blog category). Meanwhile, someone has given JK Simmons a gun, and we’re all pretty giddy here.
24th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards [TBS/TNT, 8p]
Kristen Bell hosts the 24th annual award show. Who will the actors pick as their best? Morgan Freeman will be presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award; in the wake of Time’s Up, all of the presenters tonight are women.
Counterpart [Starz, 8p]
Oscar winner JK Simmons plays two versions of himself in the highly anticipated alternate-universe sci-fi show on Starz
Crashing [HBO, 10:30p]
Speaking of giddy, I’m not gonna lie, I’m dangerously excited by an episode focusing on Pete and his ex-wife’s new-age-on-acid ex(?)-boyfriend Leif.
ALSO ON TAP TONIGHT:
- While we’re not particularly med show adherents here at Screen Scholars, Fox’s The Resident does have Matt Czuchry (that’s The Good Wife‘s Cary Agos to you) and Mystic Pizza screenwriter Amy Holden Jones.
- Yes, it’s NFL Championship Game weekend. If we care at all, we like the Vikings and Jaguars, but the latter is mostly for the sake of Jason Mendoza.
