Martin Lawrence, Christopher “Kid” Reid, and Tig Notaro are all slightly amused (and vaguely contorted) by your lack of choice for TV programming to watch tonight, so we’re gonna step on in her and suggest their comedy special, new series, and classic film, along with other things, and ease their pain.
One Mississippi [Amazon]
Tig Notaro had earned a cult following for her Sahara-dry comedy when her life fell totally apart in her early-40s; in the span of a few months, Tig was beset by two life-threatening illnesses, a break-up, and the sudden death of her mother in Mississippi. In the midst of all this, in a daze, days after a cancer diagnosis, she did a set of honest stand-up which became instant legend. Her first series plants itself firmly in the middle of tragedy — minus time — and will almost certainly find the dark humor in that beyond.
Martin Lawrence: Doin’ Time Uncut [Showtime, 9p]
The man that bought us Jerome, Sheneneh Jenkins and every worthwhile 90s catchphrase is back to deliver his first stand-up special in 14 years! I have no idea what to expect but I’m excited.
House Party [BET, 9p]
It’s Kid ‘n’ Play’s 1990 classic, telling the age-old story of legendary house parties and having to go to great lengths to attend despite an epic grounding.
