What To Watch: 05/01/2023

We’ve got the epitome of a top heavy Monday with just four new titles we’re talking about, but the top two are relatively big, even if one is on Nat Geo. It’s the second time in five days that we have the start of a mini-series that tells the exact same over 40 year old story of a mini-series from last year, just with a new shiny cast. In this case it’s the tale of the Watergate plumbers…. admittedly last year’s one was more focused on Martha Mitchell’s story. And, then again, the other limited series is about one of the most famous tragically inspiring tales of the last Century.

JASON’S PICK:
White House Plumbers [HBO, 9p]
Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux take the places of Gaslit‘s J.C. MacKenzie and Shea Whigham as E. Howard Hunt and G. Gordon Liddy to tell a fuller story at the dirty trickster who were directly involved in the 1972 break-in at the Democratic HQ in the Watergate Hotel. It’s also got a lot of greatt casting in the familiar roles of the scandal. Hopefully there will be less L

BRAD’S PICK:
A Small Light [Nat Geo, 9p]
This biographical miniseries about Anne Frank focuses on the story of Miep Gies, who helped hide the Frank family during WWII. It was Gies who retrieved Anne’s diary after they were arrrested. Unfortunately, we know how the story ends for the Frank family with only father Otto surviving the concentration camps, but Gies was a hero and deserves to have her story told. And NatGeo is getting really good at biographical mini-series.

BUT, WAIT, THERE’S MORE:

  • The Amazon Freevee sweeping family melodrama Casa Grande switches off between English and Spanish and is getting some good early buzz.
  • Finally, the Investigation Discovery program Undercover Underage is pretty much what you might expect from the title. Young people enter chats online to expose creeps who try to pick up young girls and boys on the internet. The second season debuts today.
