What To Watch: 04/18/2023

Over the years, comedian Alex Borstein has embodied iconic roles from the ultimate indirectness of Ms. Swan (MadTV) to the pure bluntness of Susie Myerson (Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), while maybe being best known as the voice of Lois Griffin on Family Guy. She hits the stage for a performance that is less standup than musical comedy. Otherwise, we’ve got a heck of a lot of reality television debuting or returning this Tuesday.

KATHERINE’S PICK:
Alex Borstein: Corsets & Clown Suits [Amazon Prime]
Alex Borstein, the multi-Emmy-, Screen Actors Guild-, and Critics Choice Award-winning star of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel stars in her first Amazon musical-comedy special. Borstein will presumably talk about her life, marriage, and divorce, though Amazon calls it “deeply personal and wildly fictitious.”

JASON’S PICK:
Longest Third Date [Netflix]
While the production value looks very much the flashy standard reality TV, the story behind this Netflix documentary is pretty damn cool. Matt and Khani met on Hinge and had two fun dates, so much so, they decided to spontaneously travel to Costa Rica… in early 2020. Then they got stuck there. Does it work out? Watch and find out.

BRAD’S PICK:
How to Get Rich [Netflix]
Look, I know I’m beyond help, but you, dear reader, may not be. So why not watch this Netflix special with financial expert Ramit Sethi? He goes across America showing folks how to live their richest lives. Is living a rich life in America even possible these days? Watch and find out, I guess!

BUT, WAIT, THERE’S MORE:

  • Those fishermen who love adventure (or at least are brave enough to go out in dangerous waters) are back for a 19th season. Deadliest Catch returns on Discovery tonight.
  • The History Channel returns to its mostly non-history ways with the latest season of Secrets of Skinwalker Ranch. Most of the secrets seem to have to do with lights and rocks.
  • The main difference between Evil Lives Here: Shadows of Death and all the other true crime shows out there is that this one focuses more on the aftermath of deadly encounters and terrible crimes. Its latest season debuts on, where else, Investigation Discovery.
