What To Watch: 02/28/2023

If you watched the excellent and Rashomon-y comic mystery The Afterparty, you’ll remember Jamie Demetriou as the memorably unmemorable Walt. The British actor also has earmed a comic rep as a clueless real estate agent leading his own series. He gets another showcase today on Netflix. The rest of our showcase rec’s are music to enjoy unironically and music to enjoy ironically.

KATHERINE’S PICK:
A Whole Lifetime with Jamie Demetriou [Netflix]
Stath Lets Flats creator Jamie Demetriou’s first Netflix special is sketch comedy and getting rave reviews.

BRAD’S PICK:
Voices Rising: The Music of Wakanda Forever [Disney+]
The music in a Black Panther movie is almost as big an event as the film itself. This new documentary examines the creation of the music heard in the movie. It will detail the score by Ludwig Göransson as well as some of the artists from the soundtrack album including the Tems cover of “No Woman No Cry” and international artists from South Africa, Mexico and Nigeria, notably Burna Boy, Snow Tha Product, E-40, Stormzy, Fireboy DML, Tobe Nwigwe, Future, PinkPantheress.

JASON’S PICK:
When Metal Ruled the 80s [Reelz, 9p]
What’s to explain? This should be fun.

BUT, WAIT, THERE’S MORE:

  • While it may seem like the latest in a series, Paramount+’s FBI True is actually a docu-series chronicling the real cases that the FBI franchise rips from the headlines.
  • The Netflix “dating” show that takes the Seinfeld contest to a new level, takes said concept to another country. Germany collects its hardest bodies for Too Hot to Handle: Germany where they proceed to try to not have sex, but often have sex.
  • Since there’s no Lifetime or Hallmark-style movies debuting tonight, let’s end this round-up with their spiritual kin: MTV reality shows. Nev, Kernie, and friends return to continue to explore the phenomenon of seduction by deceptive means their movie exposed oh-so-many years ago with the latest new episodes of Catfish: The TV Show. Then it’s new instances of the exact opposite as people trying to hide real (or at least real-ish) relationships chime in with Help! I’m in a Secret Relationship.
