What To Watch: 01/27/2022

At the climax of a crazy episode of 30 Rock, Alec Baldwin gives Tracy Morgan/Jordan a meta-heavy and self-deferential speech about how doing small screen work will finish an A-list movie career. In the coda, Tom Hanks calls George Clooney to tell Brad Pitt to take Tracy Jordan’s name off the official A-list. It’s an especially fun easter egg if you know all three starred on TV before their big ticket movie career. However, it’s also a bit obsolete nowadays, although it’s got a lot to do with the rise in popularity of streaming. This week’s Streaming Friday features new movies and shows with Harrison Ford, Eddie Murphy, Jonah Hill, J-Lo (that’s how many billions of Box Office dollars?) as well as a bunch of Emmy magnets (notable Julia Louis-Dreyfuss).

KATHERINE’S PICK:
Shrinking [Apple TV+]
This ten-episode has a lot going for it: it stars Jason Segel, who executive produces with Ted Lasso‘s Brett Goldstein, was written by Lasso‘s Bill Lawrence, and also stars Harrison Ford, Jessica Williams, Michael Urie, Christa Miller, and Lukita Maxwell. Segel is a grieving therapist who breaks the rules and in a highly unethical move, tells his clients exactly what he thinks. (I don’t love that!)

JASON’S PICK:
You People [Netflix]
Jonah Hill and black-ish creator Kenya Barris team up on this Meet the Fockers meets Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner? meets the awkward family intro scene of Get Out(?). It’s an audactious comedy, especially for these times, and the cast is insane with Hill joined by Eddie Murphy, Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, David Duchovny, with Laurie London as Hill’s intended life partner. The trailer looks genuinely hilarious.

BRAD’S PICK:
Lockwood & Co. [Netflix]
A girl with psychic abilities teams up with two boys to form a ghost hunting group in London. This thriller could feel right at home on the CW, but it’s on Netflix which means they can push the envelope if they choose. i’m in.

BUT, WAIT, THERE’S MORE:

  • Jennifer Lopez and Josh Duhamel would not be insane to complain about a Shotgun Wedding (although we certainly don’t see any stains on their shirts). In the Amazon Prime rom-com, the couple’s destination nuptuals are already going downhill when pirates attack and hold the entire wedding party hostage. In this movie’s world, it’s extremely bad luck to see the bride before the ceremony, but maybe luck changes when they bond Kevin McAllister style taking on the invaders to save their friends and family. If J-Lo is not enough to lure you in, everyone’s favorite Jennifer Coolidge plays the mother of the groom.
  • The South African crime drama Kings of Jo’Burg returns for a second series on Netflix with a new king having everyone hopeful but wary.
  • The other Netflix import is the Spanish thriller The Snow Girl, a new series based on a novel by Javie Castillo. And that’s all we got for a relatively quiet Streaming Friday. Oooooh, it’s January…
