What To Watch: 11/08/2022

Sigh. So here we are. It’s the day Democracy is on the line (as is the concept of empathyand we know whether this is a country that strives for equality and which protects rights like privacy and voting or one that buys into fear and anger and expands rights for gun owners and for the legislatures deciding who the votes of a state go to for a President in 2024. Nope, we’re not going to stand on ceremony and pretend we don’t have a side. We’re not going to simply tell you to vote, but vote Blue. Do you want a sentence with Dr. Oz, Herschel Walker, and JD Vance in it? Well, the Republicans are OK with that.

We’re probably going to watch the coverage even if it starts to get really dark. However, if you want distraction from the political universe, here are some options for this not-so-random Tuesday.

BRAD’S PICK:
Neal Brennan: Blocks [Netflix]
Neal Brennan is nothing if not creative. You remember 3 Mics. His new special is more of his trademark observations, however, this time, with a presentation involving… blocks. Oh, Netflix, where would comedy be without you.

KATHERINE’S PICK:
The Claus Family 2 [Netflix]
Because Netflix will greenlight a sequel to its worst works, and because I have accidentally seen this in its entirety–but out of order, simply because it was in the background–the teenage successor to Santa’s throne prepares for this year’s Christmas.

JASON’S PICK:
Say Hey, Willie Mays [HBO, 9p]
The ultimate 5-tool player and ruiner of Charlie Brown’s spelling bee [boom, deep cut reference], Mays, now in his 90s is one of the last links remaining to a bygone era of baseball. To highlight that, he’s the only pre-1980 player alive who was referenced in Terry Cashman’s “Willie, Mickey & the Duke.” HBO sits down with the man to discuss both that era of baseball and the barriers he had to face fighting racism and his connection to the Civil Rights movement.

BUT, WAIT, THERE’S MORE:

  • Netflix offers a new animated interactive trivia special featuring a creature of creepy eyes and a sine wave mouth who asks trivia questions of all stripes which get exceedingly harder. We’re not absolutely sure what separates Triviaverse from simply a game but play… watch it and find out.
  • Who doesn’t love Minions? Probably many people, but we’re fairly indifferent over here. If you are one of the millions who do love the overall-wearing, banana-mispronouncing creatures, then you’ll surely want to check out Minions & More 2 which you can probably still follow if you missed the first one as it’s just a bunch more shorts smashed together.
  • Finally, if you think you can best the culinary celebrity that is Bobby Flay, then by all means audition for the show Beat Bobby Flay: Holiday Throwdown, but you probably won’t make it onto this season as it’s all cast and taped. As you can probably guess, it’s on the Food Network
  • So that’s our story for this crazy second Tuesday in November. If you haven’t voted yet, please get out there and #VoteBlueToSaveDemocracy. Here’s that fun little song about baseball.
