What To Watch: 04/12/2022

An Office favorite and sketch artiste who is rarely bovvered returns to television in the lone major new or returning show. However, there’s also the finale of one of the best new programs on television. And are you really going to turn your back on Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

JASON’S PICK:
Hard Cell [Netflix]
Catherine Tate can be an acquired taste–even her two season turn on The Office as head case Nelly could be polarizing. I’m a huge fan of her entire odd catalogue–my partner and I will often do a variation on her “guess” routine from her popular UK sketch show. Her latest program takes place in a women’s prison as Tate plays multiple characters (as she’s wont to do). The reviews aren’t great, but Tate’s antics are always worth a gander if you’re a fan.

FIONA’S PICK:
Abbott Elementary [ABC, 9p]
The first season comes to a close as the students of Abbott Elementary go on their annual zoo field trip. Janine’s boyfriend, Tariq, has some big news and Janine has some choices to make. This season has been a joy to watch and I cannot wait to see what they have in store for season two.

BRAD’S PICK:
Young Rock [NBC, 8p]
Well, it looks like our hero’s dreams of football stardom are over, so what could be next for the petite Dwayne? If you guessed professional wrestling you’d be right (and you may just know what happened in real life). If you could describe this show in one word, it’d be wholesome and that’s not a bad thing.

BUT, WAIT, THERE’S MORE:

  • While Netflix’s The Creature Cases is theoretically for very small kids, but if you have children you hope to watch Poirot or one of the Law & Orders with when they get older, you can start with this. Also, we sense that it could still have some appeal to adults who either love wholesome animation or clean-cut puns.
  • Over on HGTV, Unsellable Houses returns and if you don’t know it, it’s not hard to infer its premise. Also, if you know the genre, you can probably guess that the title is not precisely true.
  • If you are a fan of a certain Homewood, Alabama, country music foursome known for hits like “Pontoon” and “Girl Crush,” you’ll probably enjoy CMT Campfire Sessions: Little Big Town, and unlike its major awards show of last week, this one is actually on CMT.
