What To Watch: 03/25/2022

It’s all about the music… at least on this Streaming Friday (and it’s not all streaming either). We’ve got a young singer documenting her surprise viral hit, a Minneapolis soul singer/rapper/downright icon declaring size ain’t nothing but a number, the latest episode of a show run by a lady whose career supernova’d when her single hit the Billboard dance and pop charts, and a J-pop star in a drama (ok, he was already an established actor when he started recording, but we had to get our stretches in).

Pachinko [Apple TV+]
Pachinko, the epic family saga by Min Jin Lee, follows several generations of a Korean family that immigrates to Japan. Just fuck me up now, Apple, because I am ready to be heartbroken all over again. (The series looks stunning, by the way, with gorgeous cinematography and an all-star cast.)

Lizzo: Watch Out for the Big Grrrlz [Amazon Prime]
If anything, Minneapolis MC/songstress Lizzo is underrated. In this reality show, she’s recruiting back-up dancers for her upcoming tour, and she’s not shy about having a type (and as someone who has always struggled to own his body, I love it): as she puts it, “this is the battle of the big girls.”

Olivia Rodrigo: driving home 2 u [Disney+]
Olivia Rodrigo’s rise to fame in the midst of a pandemic was one of the few good stories of 2021. Now the artist reflects on her career in a new documentary on Disney+. Or more specifically she takes us on a road trip. From Salt Lake City to Los Angeles. This is a document of an artist at the beginning of approaching her peak. Driving Home 2 U will be a lasting testament of Olivia finding and creating her way.

RuPaul’s Drag Race [VH1, 8p]
Last week the queens competed in a LaLaPaRuZa Lip Sync tournament. In the end, Jasmine Kennedy was sent home and after three weeks of no eliminations we are finally down to seven queens. This week the queens are performing in “Moulin Ru: The Musical.” As a big Moulin Rouge fan I am very excited!

  • That Shonda Rhimes show about sexy people with sexy horses became such a no-brainer that a second season was practically pre-ordained. Bridgerton is back for that season on Netflix today.
  • No Woman No Try looks into how far we have not come regarding Title IX and gender equality in sports. The Amazon Prime documentary focuses on women’s rugby to show the unequal nature of school sports.
  • On Discovery+, we have the new outdoors business reality show Hoffman Family Gold in which the main bearded character, Todd Hoffman–who gained fame on Gold Rush–transplants to Alaska after leaving the game for awhile.
