On The 5th Day of Christmas: Arrested Development-“Afternoon Delight”

Not one but TWO office holiday parties in an episode? Now there’s the Christmas spirit.

Sky Rockets In Flight…

It’s time for the annual Bluth company holiday party which G.O.B. is planning along with the liquor he could steal from his mom’s stash. He can’t wait to have everyone toast to him and of course remind employees how expensive his suit is (and getting more expensive with every outburst). Michael is excited to actually attend a party and enjoy it for once since he is no longer president–woo hoo. He asks George Michael to go with but the son is going to be busy praying with his girlfriend Ann’s (Her?) family. But they are running on “Bethlehem time” so he will try to stop by.

Afternoon Delight!

Feeling totally rejected by his son, Michael is off to rebuild the banana stand as is tradition this time of year and Maeby pops up to help. They decide to attend the holiday party together in solidarity. Michael and Maeby sing “Afternoon Delight” during the Karaoke portion of the evening only to figure out what the lyrics mean by the end of the song. Awkward! G.O.B. becomes the butt of the jokes all evening and in an outrage, fires all the employees. Talk about a party fail. Michael decides to clean up this mess by throwing a do over holiday party (and rehiring everyone) at the banana stand.

Does Not Seem Like It Would Be That Dirty…

Meanwhile, Buster is playing hooky from the Army about 20 feet from the stand at an arcade. Feeling scared and alone (and maybe partially inebriated) Michael’s mother calls him in distress and he sends Tobias over to check on her. That leads to one of the funniest lines of the episode. Back at holiday party part deux, G.O.B. shows up in banana costume in an effort to win over the crowd. “They are laughing with me” he thinks. But not before Momma Bluth nearly runs over everyone after having her own version of “afternoon deelite.” Thankfully, Buster saves the day with his newly found arcade skills and lifts G.O.B. out of danger but he’s lost half his costume in the process. I mean this is slapstick comedy at its best this entire episode, joke after joke, punchline after punchline land flawlessly.

But It Is Catchy! (aka Why It Works)

All the snarky hypocritical humor is nonstop entertainment while simultaneously showing all the relationship dynamics in the Bluth family at once. This power-punch episode is proof that the Bluths put the “fun” in dysfunctional.

Memorable Quotes

G.O.B: {repeatedly} “Come on!”

G.O.B: “Oh, that’s… that’s-that’s great. The guy who’s dirty dancing with his niece is going to tell the guy in the thirty-six hundred dollar suit how to run the business. Come on.”

Buster: “The seal is for marksmanship and the gorilla is for sand racing.”

Michael: “It’s family first at the holidays. [phone rings] Oh, God, it’s Mom again.”

Michael: “Make an appearance. Uh, uh, no, no. It’s-It’s okay, uh, you be with Yam. It’s fine. It’s good.”

Lindsay: “No, you’re not going to that. You see, if I show up with you, it’ll just make me seem like I’m a mother.”

Maeby: “I’ve never thought of you that way.”

Lindsay: “That’s sweet.”
