What To Watch: 07/08/2020

How’s this for timing: Alexis Mateo of RuPaul’s Drag Race All-Stars 5 introduces a new generation to legendary Puerto Rican television personality Walter Mercado as part of the show’s beloved Snatch Game (hey, the show is what it is) before becoming embroiled in one of the show’s great melodramas, and within the week, we get to find out more about the late Mercado with a Netflix documentary featuring current “It Guy” and Mercado fan Lin-Manuel Miranda. It’s a banner Netflix night tonight as we also recommend a new Australian series about strangers at a detention center and it’s got quite the impressive cast, led by an Oscar favorite and the closest thing TV’s best-ever-show-oh-my-f’in-god[TM] The Wire had to a lead actor.

NAVANI’S PICK:
Mucho Mucho Amor [Netflix]
If you grew up in a Latinx household like I did, ritual was huge – that and telenovelas. Time stopped for them. One ritual was watching Puerto Rican astrologer extraordinaire Walter Mercado on TV reading your horoscope. It was a household pastime, even if you didn’t pay attention to it, your abuela and tias did, your mom did. His voice, his taglines, his grandiose personality all became part of the soundtrack of my youth. We looked to him for guidance on everything from love to what colors to wear on NYE to usher in good fortune. This was serious business! And there has definitely been a void since his passing. Luckily, directors Cristina Costantini and Kareem Tabsch had the foresight to spend time with him to film this documentary and get a peak at the person behind the mystic. I’m thrilled to get one more chance to see him on the silver screen in all his fabulousness, doling out life lessons and of course, mucho mucho amor.

JASON’S PICK:
Stateless [Netflix]
Co-created and produced by (and starring in a supporting role) Cate Blanchett, this miniseries was a huge hit earlier this year in Australia, and now this tale of four lives intersecting at an intersection comes stateside on the premier streaming site. In addition to Blanchett, The Wire’s Dominic West also features.

BRAD’S PICK:
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. [ABC, 10p]
Mack is back in 1982 and must deal with the death of his parents. This may be the final season of Agents of Shield, but the good news is that it is going out with a bang.

  • CBS’ newest reality competition sounds like the best parts of Survivor and Fear Factor without the former’s mean-spiritedness and the latter’s eww-factor. Tough As Nails is presented by Phil Keoghan of The Amazing Race fame and features combatants showing off their skills at various strenuous jobs such as mining, bricklaying and farming.
  • E!’s signature clips show, The Soup, may feature its umpteenth host in Jade Catta-Preta, now in her second season at the helm, but it still has all the quirky sass and banal glory you’ve come to expect from this TV tentpole.
  • The latest cull from the K-drama fields is Was It Love?, new to Netflix, telling the tale of Noh Ae-jung, a single mother who suddenly is surrounded by suitors, four eligible bachelors to be exact.
