There is a definite thread through tonight’s recs in the thin line between law and criminality, from the anti-heroes of the Narco world to the 99’s craziest recurring character, Adrian Pimento. Oh, we also lightly trace the odd career arc of Tracy Lauren Marrow.
BRAD’S PICK:
Narcos: Mexico [Netflix]
The Guadalajara drug cartel’s rise continues in this stark show’s second season. Because we are still dealing with the consequences of the drug trade this show is both timely and fascinating look at how we got here.
JASON’S PICK:
Brooklyn Nine-Nine [NBC, 8:30p]
You had me at Pimento. Jason Mantzoukas and his manic (too-long) undercover cop resurfaces, which surely makes Rosa feel all kinds of ways. Even more scarily, he enlists the help of Jake & Charles to protect him from an assassin — of the sort ruthless enough to attack Pimento.
ALSO ON TAP TONIGHT:
- It’s “Cereal Bar Day” at Cloud 9 and that should be all you need to know to set your DVR to catch tonight’s Superstore as that sort of banality is the NBC sitcom’s wheelhouse.
- People are engaged before they meet face-to-face on the latest social experiment reality dating show, Love Is Blind, whose first season drops on Netflix today. The whole bad idea is hosted by ex-98 Degrees-er Nick Lachey and his presenter wife Vanessa.
- At one point around 1990, Ice-T was most famous for the controversy the rapper stirred by his hardcore side project Body Count and its best known single “Cop Killer.” Thirty years later, Ice-T is practically synonymous with police, typecast as officers like Law & Order: SVU‘s Fin Tutuola. In Ice Cold Blood, entering its third season on Oxygen tonight, takes it a step further with Ice playing curator to some gruesome crimes (think John Mulaney’s riff on Ice-T type crimes), replayed in re-enactments, in-depth interviews, and raw footage.
- And completing our descent into Full Metal Trump-ism, we’ve got the return of two shows which bring so much good energy into the universe: Oxygen’s Snapped and Paramount’s Wife Swap.
