What To Watch: 12/11/2019

It’s beginning to look a lot LOT like Christmas as we have a bunch of very special (or at least somewhat special) holiday episodes of Your Favorite Shows[TM], but our two highlights go in a different direction.

JASON’S PICK:
Moonlight Sonata: Deafness in Three Movements [HBO, 9p]
The unique — and at times insular — nature of the deaf community is merely the backdrop for the tale of a family including a young piano prodigy who got cochlear implants at a young age and his proudly deaf grandparents. There appears to be so much more going on in this elegant-looking HBO documentary.

BRAD’S PICK:
Riverdale [The CW, 9p]
Betty and Jughead investigate a series of strange attacks that have endangered Betty. Archie and the FPs attempt to take Dodger down for good. Just another day in the quaint little comic book town called Riverdale.

ALSO ON TAP TONIGHT:

  • Considering all the feels held by us Scholars for Parks & Rec, it’s a bit of a shock that we’ve hardly even mentioned Making It!, the unlikely reality/renovation show starring Leslie Knope and Ron Swanson themselves (in their alter-egos Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman). NBC has a double shot to end its season tonight.
  • In 2009, much of America gave its heart to ABC’s ongoing saga of the ultra-blended Pritchett(Dunphy) extended family. Eleven years later, they are about to give it away — but not before Modern Family‘s last Christmas (unironically titled “The Last Christmas”).
  • We don’t need yet another take on that classic “it’s-Christmas-and-the-world-would-be-better-had-I-never-lived” trope, and thankfully, it sounds like tonight’s episode of The Goldbergs avoids this despite its title: “It’s A Wonderful Life.” Tonight would seem to be all about holiday photo mishaps and prank wars. Also on ABC.
  • Yesterday’s The Masked Singer revealed the Tree to be ’90s SNL star Ana Gasteyer. Now, the masks are flying off as two out of the five remaining contestants will go home for the holidays on tonight’s semi-final.
