What To Watch: 11/11/2019

Hello, we’re Screen Scholars…

JASON’S PICK:
The Gift: The Journey of Johnny Cash [YouTube]
The Man in Black’s journey through life was certainly a complex one. Through glory and tragedy, while unquestionably a genius — both musical and otherwise, he was one of the hardest Americans to truly know. Veterans Day may be the perfect day for this release given his relation to military actions and patriotism was famously about as complicated as the country itself.

BRAD’S PICK:
Black Lightning [The CW, 9p]
Jefferson Pierce has to make some hard decisions that have consequences and agent Odell makes strides in getting Jennifer to his side. Just another day on Freeland.

KATHERINE’S PICK:
Ultimate Thanksgiving Challenge [Food, 9p]
Giada asks the five competing chefs to put a Thanksgiving spin on a classic dish. I hope it’s yams.

ALSO ON TAP TONIGHT:

  • Helen Mirren’s take on Catherine the Great came and went so fast, she hardly even said goodbye. The four-part series finishes the monarch off tonight on HBO.
  • The Food Network/Cooking Channel cabal knows at least to mostly keep holidays in their own lanes as they balance off the Holiday Baking Championship: Holiday Survival Guide on Food Network with the same channel’s TG event rep’d by Katherine above, and the Cooking Channel’s deftly titled Thanksgiving Grubdown.
  • From the overseas series dept., we have a pair of returning shows, the K-Drama take on The West Wing… (maybe?) — Chief of Staff on Netflix. Meanwhile, Acorn TV gives us the Indian musical/hospital drama The Good Karma Hospital.
