Spectacle, understatement, and motorcycles — and that sums up our three main recs for this Tuesday.
KATHERINE’S PICK:
The Little Mermaid Live! [ABC, 8p]
It’s been 30 years since Disney retconned Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale, and tonight the behemoth celebrates with a mix of live singing and airing the film itself. But Queen Latifah will play Ursula, so I am intrigued if a little bitter.
JASON’S PICK:
Seth Meyers: Lobby Baby [Netflix]
Between his looooooong stretch as the face of SNL‘s Weekend Update (while also the show’s head writer), and his powerful network position as voice for the resistance/late night host on NBC, it’s easy to forget Seth cut his teeth as a stand-up. The title hints at the personal storytelling element of his style, referring to his second child being born as he and his wife were still in the entrance of their building en route to the hospital.
BRAD’S PICK:
Mayans M.C. [FX, 10p]
The club desire for vengeance may only make things worse. Things are only getting more complicated in an already complicated season. But it makes for great television.
ALSO ON TAP TONIGHT:
- The intrepid adventures of America’s premier TV survivalist Bear Grylls finds its niche, with Running Wild with Bear Grylls moving from NBC to Nat Geo.
- Netflix’s murder road trip show, The End of the F***ing World had our aspiring serial killer discovering empathy at the end of season one. We’ll see where in picks up as the second season dropped today.
- Not to be confused with the similarly titled Profit, the mostly forgotten, quickly canceled 1996 Adrian Pasdar tale of a feral sociopath who rises to the top of the business world — and you probably aren’t doing that given that it is, as we said, long-forgotten, The Profit is a reality show featuring businessman/philanthropist Marcus Lemonis helping possible future entrepreneurs. It returns for a seventh season on CNBC.
