What To Watch: 10/30/2019

It’s the one borough not on an island, it gave us hip-hop (which should be enough on its own) and the Yankees (could be a few points for or against), and its also where one of us was born and two of us attended school at one point in time. Now HBO profiles it and we are here for it!

NAVANI’S PICK:
The Bronx, USA [HBO, 9p]
“And if it wasn’t for the Bronx…..” (as the famous lyrics in the song “Deja Vu (Uptown Baby)” sing its praises), J.Lo pays homage to it on the 6. and hello, let’s go Yankees! Finally, a doc will show all that the Bronx has contributed to art and culture. Bronx, USA follows film producer George Shapiro as he goes back to his hometown to see what’s changed and what’s stayed the same. While reminiscing he’ll chat with notable Bronx artists, creators and even students to get a sense of all the amazing things that have started in the northern-most borough (Ahem, hip-hop, salsa, doo-wop). As someone born there I’m happy to have a doc that is not just focused on the burning of the Bronx, but about what was created there after it was rebuilt.

JASON’S PICK:
Baroness Von Sketch Show [IFC, 12a]
If you haven’t watched, you may have seen the viral videos. This Canadian import enters into its fourth season as one of the best and most biting young sketch shows on television.

KATHERINE’S PICK:
2019 World Series, Game 7 [Fox, 8p]
What a game! I wasn’t feeling great about how things were going–especially after Turner’s out, and then the Nats brought their A-game and won! It’s hard to root for a DC team–they often come out strong in the beginning before faltering and losing steam (and it seems, the will to win). I’m feeling cautiously optimistic, but don’t blame me if I’ve become fully horizontal in defeat in the fifth inning. Let’s Go, Nats!

BRAD’S PICK:
Riverdale [The CW, 8p]
Ominous videotapes begin showing up on doorsteps across Riverdale that leaves everyone on edge. Jughead learns about a series of disappearances. Must be Halloween.

  • The celebration of international cuisine don’t stop and it don’t quit on Netflix, it just goes on and on and on and today it’s the latest from Yang Chen and a familiar series: Flavorful Origins: Yunnan Cuisine.
  • A&E is claiming supremacy with its newest grainy-footage-of-the-supernatural series. It’s World’s Biggest Ghost Hunt: Pennhurst Asylum and would a series title lie to a person?
  • Normally we don’t feel obliged to mention Comedy Central’s premier puppets-making-prank-phone-calls program, but when Crank Yankers features both Sarah Silverman AND Tiffany Haddish… well, we’re listening.
  • Finally, with Trump implicated (even by himself) in a massive government cover-up and, even still, support for impeachment hovering below 50%, now more than ever, the public needs the wit and wisdom of Full Frontal with Samantha Bee and thankfully there’s a new episode tonight on TBS.
