Box Office Weekend October 11, 2019

We are getting steadily closer to Halloween, and so our new films are a re-hash of horror tropes. Would you like a haunted camera? Perhaps a haunted psychiatric patient? All that and more (like the Breaking Bad movie on Netflix), below the fold. The Dead Center: A hospital psychiatrist’s own sanity is pushed to the edge when a frightened amnesiac patient insists that he has died and brought something terrible back from the other side. Ugh. Polaroid is a horror film. A young loner ends up in a Ring scenario when she unearths an old Polaroid camera. Did you know Polaroid only makes digital cameras now? Oh, and this film was supposed to be released in 2017, but Weinstein went bakrupt and the German distributor is releasing it now. Mister America stars Tim Heidecker as a man (with the same name) running for district attorney after beating a murder charge for selling faulty e-cigarettes at an EDM festival. The man doesn’t live in the disctrict he’s running in and isn’t a lawyer. Jexi stars Adam Devine as a loser addicted to his phone. Rose Byrne is the voice of his phone. This satire appears more satisfying than Her. Gemini Man stars Will Smith and Will Smith as a man and his government clone. The action film is dircted by Ang Lee. Parasite gets a wider release. Directed by Bong Joon-ho, the dark comedy follows a poverty-stricken family that ingratiates itself with a rich one. The film received the Palme d’Or at Cannes (the first Korean film to do so, and with an unanimous vote) and is South Korea’s submission for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. The Gift: The Journey of Johnny Cash is a documentary. It attempts to “untangle” the musician from myths and legends. (The film will be available on YouTube Premium in November.) Fronteras: “A Hispanic Border Patrol Agent has his morals challenged when a life-threatening narcotic sweeps through the South West.” 100 Acres of Hell: A pro-wrestler fights for his life in a nature preserve. Holiday Hell: A mysterious shopkeeper narrates several horror tales as they relate to holidays. The Addams Family is an animated adaptation on America’s gothic family. With voices from Finn Wolfhard, Charlize Theron, Oscar Isaac (who will never be Raul Julia), Chloë Grace Moretz, Nick Kroll, Bette Midler, Snoop Dogg, and Allison Janney. Beloved Beast sounds gross: A twelve-year-old befriends a killer after the death of her parents. High Strung Free Dance, an antidote to the horror film this weekend: “A young choreographer casts a contemporary dancer and an innovative pianist in New York’s most anticipated new Broadway show.” In theaters Tuesday, October 15th, 2019: Jay & Silent Bob Reboot is a cross-country comedy adventure. Jay and Silent Bob lose the rights to their names when the Bluntman and Chronic is rebooted. So the pair travel to prevent the reboot. Hijinks ensue, I suppose. In theaters Wednesday, October 16th, 2019: Echoes of Fear, a horror movie. ‘Tis the season! Streaming today on Netflix: El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie The Forest of Love Fractured Haunted, season two Insatiable, season two La influencia Plan Coeur, season two The Awakenings of Motti Wolenbruch YooHoo to the Rescue, season two Streaming Tomorrow: Banlieusards Streaming Wednesday Ghosts of Sugar Land Streaming Thursday The Unlisted
