Box Office Weekend: Friday, June 21st, 2019

It’s all about toys this weekend, with Toy Story 4 and a rebooted Child’s Play.

Swinging Safari is an Australian comedy. Honestly, it doesn’t sound very good, and it’s only getting a release here after the rest of the world got it last year. Or maybe I’m sensitive to the plotpoint of a beached whale.

Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am is a documentary about living legend and author, Toni Morrison. It’s only 2.5 stars on IMDb, though. (And Toni Morrison is five stars!)

Burn Your Maps has one star on Rotten Tomatoes.

Wild Rose is a musical drama about an aspiring country singer.

Child’s Play reboots the ‘80s franchise with Aubrey Plaza and Brian Tyree Henry. Of note, the doll recipient is 13, which seems weird, and the film integrates technology to update the film. Buddi is more than a doll, he’s an app and an at-home service. Mark Hamill voices the demented doll.

The Quiet One is a documentary about Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman.

Toy Story 4, the franchise Buddi hasn’t slashed yet, brings all the toys back to the big screen. Bonnie’s favorite toy is Forky, a spork with eyes (Tony Hale), and they have to bring him home. They’re joined by a Canadian action figure voiced by Keanu Reeves, who is so hot right now.

Nightmare Cinema is an anthology film with shorts directed by Joe Dante, Mick Garris, David Slade, Ryuhei Kitamura, Alejandro Brugués. Your frame story is a literal take on the title: Five strangers watch their deepest and darkest fears play out before them in an abandoned theater as the Projectionist preys upon their souls with his collection of disturbing films. Joke’s on you, devil, Trump 2020 is already happening!

Anna is a film from Luc Besson: “Beneath a woman’s striking beauty lies a secret that will unleash her indelible strength and skill to become one of the most feared assassins on the planet.” Jesus, what is this, 1997? Besson already made Nikita, I literally do not understand what is happening here.

The Chambermaid, which sounds promising: “A young chambermaid working in one of the most luxurious hotels in Mexico City enrolls in the hotel’s adult education program to help improve her life.”
