This weekend we have a documentary about Elena Ferrante (cool!), the U.S. release of Babylon (yeah!), and a romantic drama starring Julianne Moore (yes, please!) Of great significance is Captain Marvel.
Ferrante Fever is a documentary about author Elena Ferrante, which hopes not to unmask the writer, but, “hopes to discover the secret to her success.”
Babylon is a 1980 British film about dancehall and reggae culture in London. Called “too controversial” to release, it’s finally getting a U.S. release today!
The Kid is a Western. A young man (the Kid, I guess) runs off into the West to escape his bad guy uncle (Chris Pratt) who must run into a Sheriff (Ethan Hawke) who is looking for Billy the Kid (Dane DeHaan, ew).
Badla is a Hindi-language The Night Of: “A young dynamic entrepreneur finds herself in a locked hotel room next to the body of her dead lover. She hires a prestigious lawyer to defend her, and over the course of one evening, they work together to find out what actually happened.”
Captain Marvel, the latest Marvel film, stars Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, the most powerful superhero in the known universe, who finds herself on Earth caught between an alien war. With Ben Mendelsohn, Clark Gregg, Djimon Hounsou, Gemma Chan, Jude Law, Lee Pace, and Samuel L. Jackson.
Gloria Bell is a romantic drama starring Julianne Moore, John Turturro, Michael Cera, Caren Pistorius, Brad Garrett, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Rita Wilson, Sean Astin, and Holland Taylor. It is directed by Sebastián Lelio, who made Gloria in 2013 and has reimagined that critical success for an American audience. I’d usually roll my eyes, byt Julianne Moore!
3 Faces is a Farsi-language drama about oppression.
Loving Vincent: The Impossible Dream is a one-hour documentary about the Oscar-nominated film Loving Vincent, the world’s first fully painted feature film.
