There aren’t a lot of releases this month, but boy are there a bunch this weekend. Nine today, two Wednesday, and three Thursday. A bunch of them are horror, so get ready to cover those peepers!
St. Agatha is a horror film about a pregnant woman who takes shelter in a convent. But it’s in a community of, I don’t know, satanists, probably? The premise sounds a lot like Rosemary’s Baby, a much better film than this one, which has two stars on IMDb. It’s the ‘50s, so like, I have a lot of issues here.
The Prodigy is a horror movie about a gifted boy who is also sinister. And his mom is played by Taylor Schilling.
Everybody Knows is a Spanish-language psychological thriller starring Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz. Secrets come out into the open!
What Men Want
Under The Eiffel Tower
Hotel By The River is a black and white film from South Korea. An aging poet summons his children to a hotel by the Han River to see him before he dies.
The Gospel of Eureka is a documentary about gospel drag in a small, remote down. Narrated by Mx Justin Vivian Bond.
The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part …is self-explanatory. (But will Will Ferrell be there?)
Cold Pursuit is the story of Mr. Plow, if it starred Liam Neeson as Homer Simpson (with the skills of a vigilante), if Springfield was a “ritzy Rocky Mountains resort town,” Bart was murdered, and Barney was a drug lord.
Coming Wednesday, February 13th, 2019:
Birds of Passage, from the people who made Embrace the Serpent looks at illegal drugs in Colombia. I want to watch the HELL out of this. The film is nominated for an Oscar.
Isn’t It Romantic is a comedy starring Rebel Wilson as a woman who bonks her head and wakes up in an alternate reality where her life is a romantic comedy. The horror! This is not the same as Amy Schumer’s much-hated I Feel Pretty.
Coming Thursday, February 14th, 2019:
Alita: Battle Angel is a live-action adaptation of the manga Gunm. The film is co-written and produced by James Cameron and directed by Robert Rodriguez. A amnesiac female cyborg navigates a post-apocalyptic world while understanding her “extraordinary past.” Starring Christoph Waltz, Rosa Salazar, and because God Is Testing Me, Mahershala Ali.
Happy Death Day 2U is a sequel to 2017’s Happy Death Day, with lead character Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe) returning, only to learn there’s tougher things in life than not dying. Like a white, violent Grownish. She’s back in the timeloop, and this time, her friends are with her!
Fighting With My Family is a PG-rated, family-friend biopic, about WWE wrestler Paige, who came from a family of professional wrestlers and dreamed of joining the WWE. (And she did!) Starring Florence Pugh, Jack Lowden, Nick Frost, Lena Headey, and Vince Vaughn, and written directed by Stephen Merchant (OK, ya sold me!)
