Box Office Weekend: Friday, January 11th, 2019

This weekend there’s a film for kids, a literary adaptation, foreign films, and Keanu Reeves.

The Aspern Papers stars Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, Joely Richardson, and Vanessa Redgrave in an adaptation of the Henry James novel.

Pledge is a horror film! College freshman realize they pledged the wrong frat when their hazing is more aggressive than expected. This is why you don’t pay for friends.

Alone in the Dead of Night: “Mallory, a depressive, pill-popping art student with a knee injury, must survive the night in her apartment when she is haunted by evil, malevolent beings.” Feeling a little attacked.

Tall Tales from the Magical Garden of Antoon Krings is an animated film about a traveling cricket.

Perfect Strangers is a foreign comedy. A dinner party gets cra-azy when the host makes her guest answer all calls and read all texts.

Buffalo Boys is an Indonesian action film. Two brothers leave The Wild West to avenge their father’s death.

The Upside is a “touching” film sure to revitalize Kevin Hart’s career. Ugh. Hart and Bryan Cranston star in a hamfisted drama that shows which of our friends lack taste and cynicism simultaneously.

Replicas is a sci-fi drama starring Keanu Reaves. Happy January, ya’ll! (The third John Wick comes out this spring.)

A Dog’s Way Home is a family drama about a dog that travels 400 miles to reunite with its owner. This was my JAM when I was little, but I’m embarrassed on behalf of Ashley Judd.

Coming Wednesday, January 16

What Is Democracy? is a documentary that “connects the past and the present, the emotional and the intellectual, the personal and the political, in order to provoke and inspire.” Um, OK.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly is the TWENTIETH DRAGON BALL FILM.

The Heiresses is a Portugese drama about a woman who takes up taxi driving when her inherited fortune deis up. She drives old, rich ladies exclusively, and she opens up to a new life. I. AM. SO. HERE. FOR. THIS. The film was Portugal’s submission to the Oscars, but it was not shortlisted.

Coming Thursday, January 17

All These Small Moments

Today on Hulu, the second season of Future Man:’m definitely bingeing this, assuming I meet my deadlines. Our Founding Scholar, Jason, really enjoyed the first season!

Today on Amazon, Informer on Netflix:

Friends from College: Season 2

Sex Education

The Last Laugh
If you hoped (dreaded) it was a remake of the classic film, it’s not. Apparently Chevy Chase is still getting work!

Coming to the platform January 15:

This week’s unavailable Netflix trailers include: ReMastered: Massacre at the Stadium, Solo, Sebastian Maniscalco: Stay Hungry
