This weekend we have a totally unnecessary adaptation of classic literature, an animated feature for kids, some indies, and some docs.
Golden Job is a Cantonese-language action/heist about a band of brothers who are double-crossed and foiled when they try to “boost a truck of life saving medicine” they plan to deliver to refugees.
Matangi/Maya/M.I.A is a documentary about recording artist M.I.A., “drawn from a cache of personal footage.”
Cruise follows an Italian American who falls in love with a privileged, Jewish girl from Long Island in the ’80s.
Smallfoot is an animated film from Warner Bros. James Corden voices a person (a smallfoot) who stumbles into a Yeti camp. The Bigfoots are voiced by Channing Tatum, Common, Gina Rodriguez, LeBron James, and Yara Shahidi.
Hell Fest is a horror film.
The Old Man & The Gun stars Robert Redford as Forrest Tucker, a man who escaped from San Quentin at 70 and “enchanted the public with a string of heists.” Tucker was profiled in a New Yorker article, which inspired the film. Sissy Spacek, Casey Affleck, and Danny Glover also star.
Sui Dhaaga – Made In India is a Hindi-language drama about a husband and wife who turn become entrepreneurs
Black 47 is a drama. A “battle-hardened soldier deserts the British army” in 1847, only to return to a Ireland and find it ravaged by famine. The film stars Hugo Weaving, James Frecheville, Jim Broadbent, Stephen Rea, and apparently no women.
Night School stars Kevin Hart of one of “several misfits” taking a “longshot at the GED exam.” Her majesty Tiffany Haddish stars as the group’s teacher.
All About Nina stars Beau Bridges, Camryn Manheim, Chace Crawford, Common, Jay Mohr, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Winstead is a stand-up comic who flees her troubled past by going to LA. There, she meets a man who makes her face her troubles.
Little Women is a modern re-telling of the Louisa May Alcott novel. Little Women turns 150 this year and this is the thanks we get, a bullshit update that I did not fucking ask for, fuck everyone, I’m not standing for this tripe.
Bad Reputation is a documentary about Joan Jett.
Summer ’03 stars Andrea Savage, Erin Darke, Jack Kilmer, Joey King, June Squibb, and Paul Scheer. A family’s peaceful summer is shaken when a conniving grandmother reveals, on her deathbed, family secrets to her 16-year-old granddaughter. Rude.
