VOTE IN THE FIRST ROUND HERE!!
WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT:
Two years ago Screen Scholars hosted its own NCAA Basketball-style tournament. It was a lot of fun, filled with fun, love, Google surveys, and incessant begging on social media to vote. The Scholars could not be more thrilled to fill the brackets with 64 brilliant, daring, shows for another round of fervent discussion. Please don’t mute our social media feeds. (If you do, the top shows will be Atlanta, Jane the Virgin, Twin Peaks, and The Run Down with Robin Thede, so let’s make this a fair fight!)
Tomorrow the voting will begin, and it’s going to be fast—by next week we’ll have narrowed our, um, Salacious 64 to the Sweet 16. But it won’t be slapdash. This year we’ve swapped the seeds for clear categories, making a sincerely thoughtful effort to group the shows by common threads. You’ll see four shows from the following categories, pit against each other in a way we think makes sense: Family Comedy, Family Dramedy, Based On A True Story, Crime-solving Savants, Decades Ago, Dark Places, Fake News, Late Night, Military, Medical Dramas, Politics, Reboots, Spooky!, Superheroes, Women Be Doing It For Themselves, and Workplace Comedy.
And why hide those shows, why not stoke the anticipation? They are: Black-ish, Bob’s Burgers, One Day At A Time, Baskets, Here And Now, Jane the Virgin, Life In Pieces, This Is Us, Drunk History, This Is Not Happening, Unsolved, American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace, MacGuyver, Scorpion, The Alienist, The Librarians, Another Period, Everything Sucks, Fresh Off the Boat, Red Oaks, BoJack Horseman, Atlanta, Stranger Things, UnREAL,The Joel McHale with Joel McHale, Last Week Tonight with Jon Oliver, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, Late Night with Seth Meyers, SNL, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, The Rundown with Robin Thede, Designated Survivor, Homeland, Madam Secretary, Veep, Fuller House, The X-Files, Twin Peaks: The Return, Will & Grace, Black Mirror, Lore, Supernatural, Ghosted, Black Lightning, Jessica Jones, Riverdale, The Tick, Grace & Frankie, Grown-ish, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, SMILF, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Corporate, High Maintenance, The Good Place, NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, S.W.A.T., SEAL Team, Chicago Med, Grey’s Anatomy, The Good Doctor, and The Resident.
As the competition continues, we’ll have one show from each “genre,” until the genres are eliminated and only one show still stands. Our first winner was Broad City. Our shows this time are meant to reflect what’s currently airing—or at the forefront of viewers’ minds—from a variety of sources. So while it may seem to a diehard fan of Red Oaks to include MacGuyver, we want everyone included, from those who cut cable to those who fold their laundry while indulging in CBS.
We can’t wait to get started, and hope you’ll dive in with us tomorrow!
