2017 Should Be Mahershala Ali’s Year

Mahershala Ali was prolific last year, appearing in Netflix’s Luke CageKicks, Moonlight, Free State Of Jones, and Hidden Figures. He was the Big Bad, a father figure with dubious morals, a runaway slave, and a heartthrob love interest. For his role in Moonlight Ali has been nominated for the following:

  • African-American Film Critics Association Award for Best Supporting Actor
  • Alliance of Women Film Journalists Award for Best Supporting Actor
  • Austin Film Critics Association Award for Best Supporting Actor

  • Detroit Film Critics Society Award for Best Supporting Actor
  • Florida Film Critics Circle Award for Best Supporting Actor
  • Satellite Award for Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture

Of those awards, three were nominations, three are pending, and the rest of wins. I am breathlessly awaiting Ali’s nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. I assume this will follow Ali’s acceptance at the Golden Globes this weekend.

Ali was in three major titles this year, plus two that most people might recognize. This may finally be the year I stop explaining, you know, the handsome guy who is barely in The Hunger Games, or that guy everyone knows from House of Cards, no, not Kevin Spacey.

It would be a good start to a great year to have Ali, a Black, Muslim man, accept these awards in Trump’s America.

Ali will appear in the Roxanne Shanté biopic Roxanne Roxanne, premiering at Sundance this month. (It might be fair to say that all three of the founding editors are interested in Roxanne Roxanne.)

Ali’s interview with Trevor Noah on The Daily Show last year is embedded below:
