What to Watch: 08/09/2016

Bored. Boredom. Boring Sports! No, these classic words of Gene Belcher don’t speak for us … well, mostly. At least not tonight. Between the Olympics and the anticipation of the NFL, a majority of our top selections relate to the sporting life. But there’s also intrigue, crime, suspense, deception, the supernatural, new comics trying to recapture the spirit of a classic sketch show, and, of course, sex.

Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Los Angeles Rams [HBO, 10p]
It was pretty pre-ordained that the on-the-rise and literally on-the-move Rams would be the focus of this year’s volume of HBO’s in-depth in-camp Hard Knocks series. Not only are they returning to the country’s second largest city after two decades, but they have a rookie QB, a great young defense led by affably charismatic Aaron Donald, and a world of hope.

Dead of Summer [Freeform, 9p]
Buried heads, dead counsellors… The mystery is deepening. But the REAL mystery is why haven’t they closed the camp and send everyone home?

Olympics Primetime [NBC, 8p]
More furtive cheering for Katie Ledecky, Michael Phelps, and Missy Franklin. I’m not ashamed to admit I love swimming and diving. Pass the tissues too, because gymnastics really gets to me.

  • Hey, Pretty Little Liars, we believe in you – at least in your ability to bring the melodrama and keep up intrigue around multiple “A” over seven seasons.
  • It’s the season finale of TNT’s crime thriller Animal Kingdom and Catherine’s missing and, of course, the law is closing in on the family.
  • We are still watching The CW’s revival of MadTV, even though it unsurprisingly has yet to match the original, because there is no lack of comic promise in the new cast.
  • Nikki Glaser aims to spend 24 hours in a Las Vegas strip club, so, um, we’ll miss you, Nikki. Also, Tinder Tapout, on Comedy Central’s Not Safe.
