What to Watch: 06/18/2016

There’s no shortage of programming tonight, particularly for a Summer Saturday — plenty of sports, including matches much of the world is watching, all kinds of reality shows, and even a couple scripted series. However, we’ve decided to focus on one crazy event that could be Sharknado…or could be Sharknado 3, as James Franco has decided to put his own quirky twist on a decades old Lifetime Movie — one that’s revered by lovers, both ironic and supergenuine, of Lifetime’s brand of dramatics (i.e. ones with the prefix melo-). Although our recommendations come in varied shades…it’s almost as if we’re presenting it, because we know you won’t be able to look away.

Mother, May I Sleep With Danger? [Lifetime, 8p]
This year is the 20th anniversary of the original, so-bad-it’s-good Tori Spelling made-for-TV bliss Mother, May I Sleep with Danger? This new one, with James Franco, finds Spelling playing the mom, horrified not that her daughter’s love interest is a violent maniac, but… a female werewolf. (Sleeping with Other People airs on Showtime at 9 p.m.!) Lifetime really dropped the ball here; I’ll have my take in a few days.

Feeling more like something that should premiere on the CW, the James Franco remake of the 1996 cult classic features original cast members Tori Spelling, Ivan Sergei and vampires.

Far be it from me to provide our slot machines’ lemon to our other two editors’ gold bars. How can I not recommend a quirky television appointment event? Well, James Franco, you might respond! And you’re probably right, you sassy figment of my imagination. But I’m still making it my choice.

  • It’s unfortunate that Hell on Wheels, that thrilling battle of guns and wits set against the backdrop of the birth of the American railroad, does not get its buzzy due, lurking in the shadows of AMC’s grand dames and their spinoffs. Well, it quietly returned last week — this week, Cullen and Truckee deal with their rift.
  • Also on AMC, staying around the same timeframe, there’s the decently reviewed docu-series The American West, with its second installment tonight.
  • Outlander is still around on Starz, and its fans love it.
