Monday’s Best Reviewed: Person of Interest

The return of key memorable characters yields vastly different results for two action dramas. On Person of Interest, Sarah Shahi’s Agent Shaw returns and the terrorist busting hourlong scores what is almost universally hailed as one of the best episodes of the long-running series. Jada Pinkett Smith’s rebirth of Fish, one of Gotham’s original supervillains, is less warmly welcomed — or as Kyle Fowle at AV Club puts it: “it doesn’t mean a thing.” The rest of the evening’s fare earns mostly lofty marks, with last week’s winner Bates Motel keeping up the torrid dramaturgical pace in the new post-Mother world, and Jane the Virgin’s second season goes out in marital bliss style, causing Vulture‘s Kathryn VanArendonk to “recap with emojis, [including] several varieties of hearts, the running man, the dancing woman, and lots and lots of fires and heart-eyed faces.”

Monday, May 16th’s Best: Person Of Interest (9.9/10)

A bit of a dark horse winner this week as CBS spy thriller Person of Interest wins the night handily. IGN‘s Matt Fowler gives it a perfect 10.0, calling it “spectacular” and a “masterpiece” that tells a “dark, subversive, heartbreaking story.” Alexa Planje of AV Club observes the show “took the return of Shaw and all of the expectations that came with it as a personal challenge and decided to just go ahead and knock this episode out of the park.” Sean McKenna at TV Fanatic gives due credit to the guest actress. “Sarah Shahi was able to bring that kick-ass manner to Shaw again, all while illustrating the paranoia and emotion that went with her character’s descent.”
