Sunday’s Best Reviewed: Veep

It’s another banner week for the HBO Sunday night line-up, scoring three out of four of the top shows, led by Veep‘s perfect score for the Selina-centric — and surprisingly moving — episode “Mother.” Last week’s champion, Silicon Valley ousts Action Jack and has another stirring week of shenanegans gone awry. Its signature program, Game of Thrones benefits from seven days’ distance from the will-they-or-won’t-they surrounding Jon Snow’s alleged demise. This week, it’s The Last Man on Earth, that prevents a top three sweep with a darkly moving episode about dealing with death and denial during a post-apocalyptic world. Almost everything receives near-raves all around, save for the wandering prequel world of Fear the Walking Dead.

Sunday, May 15th’s Best: Veep (10.0/10)

With the rare Veep that keeps the camera mostly focused on its titular character, the program continues its strong fifth season. “Mother” allows Selina Meyer’s myriad flaws to show, and as Vulture‘s Jessica Goldstein confirms, it’s “glorious.”  Kate Kulzick at AV Club agrees, adding “there’s a lot of dark humor in the episode, but “Mother” doesn’t let Selina or the audience distract themselves with jokes, much as Selina may try.” We were also not cold to its genuine appeal.

The Rest of the Night:

The Last Man on Earth – 9.7

Silicon Valley – 9.2

Game of Thrones – 9.2

The Simpsons – 8.5

Penny Dreadful – 8.1

The Family – 8.0

Once Upon a Time – 8.0

Bob’s Burgers – 7.0

Quantico – 6.5

Fear the Walking Dead – 6.2
