This Weekend at the Box Office: 04/07/16

Batman vs. Superman and Zootopia remain on top, with first and second place respectively. God’s Not Dead 2, so easy to mock last week, took fourth place with $8.1 million. Hot on its heels in tone and winnings, in fifth place, is Miracles from Heaven with $7.5 million.

The Invitation follows the waking nightmare of going to your ex-wife’s dinner party, which is probably even harder if you’re possibly unhinged, as Logan Marshall-Greene’s character might be, or the new husband looks just like you, as poor Michael Huisman does.

The Dead Room is a New Zealand horror film about two psychics and two scientists investigating a haunted farmhouse after its occupants flee.

Smothered finds five horror legends (played by legends Kane Hodder, R.A. Mihailoff, Bill Moseley, Dane Rhodes, and Malcolm Danare) haunted when they ditch a convention to “haunt” an RV park.
The Dying of the Light is infinitely scarier (to me) as the documentary examines the industry-wide conversion to digital projection.

The Boss is this weekend’s must see. The film stars Melissa McCarthy as a woman who loses everything after she’s arrested for insider trading and finds a way back to financial success through the help of her assistant, played by Kristen Bell.

Hardcore Henry is a Russian action film depicting the action from a first-person perspective, like a videogame.

Louder Than Bombs is a limited-release drama that examines a family fractured after the death of its matriarch. It stars Jesse Eisenberg, Gabriel Byrne, Isabelle Huppert, and Devin Druid. Druid was last seen in 2014 as a teenage Louie C.K. in Louie and Olive Kitteridge.

Mr. Right is a dark comedy starring Anna Kendrick as a woman who falls in love with a reverse hitman, played by Sam Rockwell. Very ’90s.

Demolition stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a rich-as-hell man who finds himself after the untimely death of his wife. If that Gyllenhaal’s steez now?

Already playing films include the Wednesday release Vita Activa – The Spirit of Hannah Arendt, Everybody Wants Some, Meet the Blacks, Allegiant, 10 Cloverfield Lane, and Deadpool.
