It’s a battle between irreverent half-hour series featuring 20-somethings and 30-something pals who are still reasoning out how to be adult humans — leading to some of the most hilarious misadventures on television.
New Girl‘s a bit longer in the tooth, but it’s survived the two-time departure of Coach Damon Wayans, Jr., the romantic roller-coaster of CeCe and Schmidt (leading to recent hilarious wedding planning), and Megan Fox. The residents of the L.A. loft have grown through all of their wacky mishaps, and what once was a show centered around the manic pixieness of Zooey Deschanel has become the perfect ensemble of deeply etched characters.
Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer’s Broad City antics already had a significant following from its webseries of the same name. After Amy Poehler helped bring them over to Comedy Central, the UCB back-seaters quickly became the well-earned toast of the TV critical world. Broad City presents realistic portraits of humanity; beyond eccentric Ilana and introverted Abbi, there’s Hannibal Buress’ drily chill dentist and erstwhile Ilana-love Lincoln, and Paul W. Downs’ earnestly bubbly trainer — and one-time niche porn star — Trey. This season introduced an all-time great cameo in Oscar-winner Melissa Leo’s hyper-Draconian co-op manager.
So, we know it’s not easy, but vote your conscience in our fifth matchup tomorrow — either the NYC duo or the L.A. fivesome — and one will advance from 16 to 8.
