Tuesday’s Best Reviewed: Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

As the Marvel universe expands to a seemingly endless horizon, so too does it contract — in this case, losing two of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s best characters in exes Lance Hunter and Bobbi Morse. The pair have flown to spin-off (if we can even call these that anymore) Marvel’s Most Wanted. While some critics are wary of the move, most loved this tumultuous episode. Most Tuesday night programs fared well, though each had at least one dissenter. American Crime Story introduced the jury and the not-always smooth — or straight — path they trod (in fact, 10 jurors were excused for various reasons). New Girl and iZombie juggled an insane amount of plot-points — estranged dads, petulant man-children, questionable romances — to generally positive effect. Rounding out the night were a pair of young sci-fi shows, The Flash, which brought out a bad version of its hero (very popular these days), and Limitless, whose disappearances and revelations were appreciated, at least, by IGN.

Bobbi and Hunter are captured in Russia, charged with an assassination they didn’t want, en route to new spin-off Marvel’s Most Wanted. Alex McCown of AV Club loved “Parting Shot,” while questioning the decision to move the characters in the header, and reasoning “It’s easy to see how [spinning them off is] an appealing idea for ABC, the kind of frothy fun that’s right up its alley. It’s harder to see how anyone could possibly think it’s not a wretched move for Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Even Jay Ruymann of TV Fanatic, who awards the show 5/5 stars, has his doubts, musing “people fell in love with these two as individuals and as a couple, and while the end to their story was very satisfying, it doesn’t work as well knowing they’re just going to pick up with the next mission on their own show.” Oddly enough, it’s IGN‘s Eric Goldman — issuer of the episode’s lowest rating of the night — who holds out the most hope for the next step. He concludes “given the rushed nature of it all, this was a nice sendoff for Bobbi and Hunter and makes me a bit more curious for how Most Wanted will begin and what will set them on their next adventure.”

The Rest of the Night:
